Frequently asked questions about Speech:

What is the time commitment? 

• One weekly team meeting (Mondays)

• Two other scheduled practices (Tuesday-Friday)

• Weekly tournaments (Saturdays)

Will I have to speak in front of a lot of people?

• In most categories, you'll speak in front of approximately 8 people (fellow competitors and one judge). In certain categories you'll usually only speak in front of the judge.

Do I have to write a new speech every week?

• No! Most categories perform the same speech every week. Depending on the category you choose, you may not even have to write your own speech. Some categories require that you do, but in others, you use pre-written scripts or excerpts.

My friend said there are a lot of categories, how do I know which one is right for me?

• Don't worry! There are a lot of options, which can seem overwhelming, but your coaches and captains will work with you to find the best fit!

Is there a cost?

• Speech is a high school activity with a registration fee that starts at $60. The fee is $40 on a reduced lunch plan and $20 if you qualify for free lunch. 

• If the activity cost is the only thing keeping you from joining the team, talk to a coach about potential sponsorship.
